Offense Powers Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of Stonehill

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader (16-0 and 7-6) with the Stonehill Skyhawks Friday afternoon at the Ripken Experience. The Lions improved to 2-3, while the Skyhawks fell to 0-3.

Game One: Molloy 16, Stonehill 0
  • The Lions went ahead 1-0 with a home run from sophomore Garrett Scavelli in the first.
  • In the second, graduate student Peter Theodorellis hit a two-RBI single to increase the advantage to 3-0.
  • Graduate student Matt Overton hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it 4-0.
  • Molloy used a five-run fifth to make it 9-0. Graduate student Jake McCarthy drove in two runs with a double, senior David Franchi hit a sac fly, which scored  McCarthy, and sophomore Chris Einemann hit a two-RBI double.
  • In the six, McCarthy, who drove in three runs, hit a solo home run.
  • Highlighted by a three-run home run by senior Chris Peralta, the maroon and white plated six runs in the eighth to go up 16-0.
  • Junior Charlie Cucchiara pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out six to move to 1-0 on the season.
  • Redshirt freshman Connor Huckemeyer fanned five batters in two innings pitched.
Game Two: Molloy 7, Stonehill 6
  • Senior Matt Overton and redshirt senior Thomas Brady hit RBI doubles in the first to give Molloy a 2-0 advantage.
  • Senior Robby Keane hit an RBI single in the second to increase the lead to 3-0, and Theodorellis brought in senior Patrick Hoffman to make it 4-0.
  • Stonehill tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the second.
  • In the fifth, Overton put the Lions up, 5-4, with a solo homer.
  • After the Skyhawks tied the game in the fifth, sophomore Matt Yip blasted a two-run shot to put the maroon and white ahead 7-5.
  • Junior AJ Verga picked up the win, and Theodorellis pitched a scoreless inning for this first save of the year.
