Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Molloy women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2022 season, defeating the Southern Connecticut State University Owls, 14-12, at the RVC Sports Complex. Molloy moves to 1-1 on the season, while Southern Connecticut falls to 0-1.
How it Happened
- Freshman Alyssa Oddo sparked the Lions' offense with a goal just 54 seconds into the game. Molloy struck again with a goal from junior Amanda Weber, off a pass from senior Lucy Emptage.
- Oddo recorded her second goal of the day, assisted by Weber, giving Molloy an early 3-0 lead with 6:02 remaining in the first quarter.
- Southern Connecticut's Karlie Rowe brought the Owls within two, 3-1, at the 5:39 mark. Molloy responded with an extra-man goal by senior Abbie Bellport. The Lions led 4-1 at the end of the opening quarter.
- After two quick goals by the Owls brought the score within one at 4-3, freshman Alexa Amorison found junior Joanna Mauceri, who netted a goal with 11:02 till halftime.
- 20 seconds later, freshman Megan Rugolo found the back of the net to put Molloy up 6-3. Amorison then struck with a goal with 8:38 remaining to extend the lead to four, 7-3.
- Back-to-back goals in a span of 15 seconds by the Owls cut the lead in half at 7-5.
- Senior Kara Rosenberg limited the damage with a goal, assisted by junior Hallie Ross, putting Molloy up 8-5 with 5:28 to go in the second quarter. Molloy led 9-7 at the half following two goals by Southern Connecticut and one from freshman Sofia Quitoni.
- Bellport opened the scoring in the second half, extending the Molloy lead to 10-7.
- After an Owls' goal, Emptage pushed the Lions lead back to three. Molloy closed the third quarter in front 11-8.
- Bayleigh Takacs and Rowe brought the score within one, 11-10, for the Owls with 9:48 left, but junior Alyssa Licata fired back-to-back goals to put the lead to 13-10 for the Lions.
- After Rowe scored her fourth goal of the game for the Owls, Licata sealed the game with another goal with 1:01 remaining in the game.
- Southern Connecticut closed the game with a goal with 19 seconds left as Molloy won 14-12.
Top Performances
- Licata recorded a hat-trick with three goals on three shots. Bellport and Oddo both netted two goals in the game.
- Emptage added a goal with four assists.
- Junior Haille Ross tallied five assists.
- Freshman Carly Howell picked up seven ground balls, while causing three turnovers.
- Sophomore Ryan Smith caused six turnovers and picked up one ground ball.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Mary-Kate Sweeney recorded eight saves.
