Softball Opens Season at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. - The softball team returned to the field this morning at the Smith Road Complex with a doubleheader against Newberry College and Georgia Southwestern University. 

Game One: Newberry 8, Molloy 0 (Five Innings)
  • A lead off walk, sacrifice bunt, and two singles gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead. 
  • Two additional runs would cross home plate before the end of the inning to set the score at 3-0.
  • Senior Amanda King recorded Molloy's first hit of the season with a single through the left side to start the fifth inning, but the Lions were unable to plate a run.
  • Newberry scored five runs on five hits in the fifth inning, including two RBI doubles and one RBI single, to invoke the mercy rule, winning the contest, 8-0.
  • King's hit as the lone one for the maroon and white. 
  • Junior Steph Conrade had one stolen base.
  • Graduate student Courtney Greene struck out one batter through 4.1 innings of work.
Game Two: Georgia Southwestern 9, Molloy 0
  • After two scoreless innings, Zoe Willis of the Canes hit a solo shot over the left center fence to give Georgia Southwestern a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
  • Two hits and an error in the fourth increased the Canes' lead to 3-0.
  • Georgia Southwestern added six runs in the fifth inning, winning the contest 9-0.
  • Conrade and senior Alex Burns each recorded hits for the maroon and white, with Burns tallying a double.

The Lions will have another crack at both the Wolves and the Canes tomorrow (Feb. 20) with a split doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
