Eaton, Bachman Drive in Runs in Softball's Doubleheader at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. - The softball team battled against Georgia Southwestern and Newberry this afternoon to close out the opening weekend of the 2022 season, falling to 0-4. 

Game One: Georgia Southwestern 6, Molloy 3
  • An error in the first at bat of the game set the table for an RBI single to right from Lacey Rutledge to give the Canes a 1-0 advantage. Graduate student stopped the bleeding, however, and recorded all three outs of the inning via strikeout.
  • A successful sacrifice bunt prior to a triple from Kimmy Singer put Georgia Southwestern in front, 2-0 in the second inning.. The visiting team on the scoreboard added an additional run on a bunt fielder's choice in the next at bat.
  • Junior Akemi Poyer walked and then stole second base to start the third inning. Junior Emma Bachman's speed saw her reach on a bunt single, also adding a stolen base. With runners on second and third, junior Karsyn Eaton plated both Poyer and Bachman for Molloy's first RBIs of the season, bringing the Lions within one. 
  • Rutledge picked up her second RBI of the afternoon with a triple to return the Canes' lead to two in the top of the fourth.
  • In the home half of the inning, a single from senior Marissa Nicoletti, a wild pitch, and a walk to Poyer allowed a single up the middle from Bachman to bring the maroon and white back within one, 4-3.
  • GSW would round out the scoring in the top of the seventh, driving in runs on a single and a sacrifice fly.
  • Bachman and Eaton each recorded two hits. Bachman drove in one run while Eaton drove in two. 
  • Bachman, Poyer, and sophomore Chrissie Huhn each added stolen bases. 
  • Greene tossed a complete game, striking out a season-high six batters.
Game Two: Newberry 19, Molloy 2
  • After a scoreless first inning, Newberry scored seven runs on six hits in the second.
  • Bachman's lead off walk, and an infield single from junior Steph Conrade gave two baserunners for the Lions in the top of the third. A ground out from Eaton plated Bachman to put Molloy on the board before a double from sophomore Katie Hand plated Conrade to set the score at 7-2.
  • The Wolves' offense continued to surge in the home half of the inning, scoring five runs on three hits to make it 12-2.
  • The home team added an additional seven runs in the fourth inning to round out the score at 19-2.
  • Hand led with two hits. Conrade, freshman Amanda Cerretani, Eaton, and sophomore Myah Cepeda all tallied one.
  • Freshman Natalie Moussa made her collegiate debut in the circle for the decision, striking out one. Senior Amanda King fannd two in two innings of relief.

Molloy will return to Winter Haven, Fla. for the annual Spring Games in two weeks. The tournament will begin with a doubleheader against American International College on Mar. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
