Rochester, N.Y. – On the back of 53 rebounds and holding the opponent to just 22 percent shooting from the field, including seven percent from three-point range, the Molloy women's basketball team defeated the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 64-44, Saturday afternoon inside Voller Athletic Center. Molloy improves to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Redhawks move to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
How it Happened
- The first five points of the contest came from graduate student Gianni Domond. Molloy trailed, 6-5, 4:34 into the game.
- The Lions went on a 9-0 rally, shooting 80 percent from the field, to take a 14-6 lead with 98 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Molloy led, 19-8, after one quarter of play.
- The two teams traded baskets as the second quarter began, but a layup from sophomore Danielle Hippner kept Molloy in front, 24-12, with 6:46 remaining in the first half.
- Molloy ended the stanza on a 10-5 rally, capped by a three from freshman Rosa Rizzitelli, to take a 34-17 lead into halftime.
- A pair of free throws from junior Trinity Hudson and a layup from sophomore Samantha Muller extended Molloy's lead, 40-19, in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
- Roberts Wesleyan concluded the third on a 10-5 run to cut the deficit to 45-29 heading to the final frame.
- The Lions matched the Redhawks shot for shot to begin the final stanza, but a three-point field goal from Rizzitelli gave Molloy its largest lead of the afternoon, 57-34, with 5:02 remaining in the contest.
- The home team would come within 20, 59-39, but that is as close as Molloy would allow the game to get. The Lions would hold Roberts Wesleyan to 30 percent from the field and 17 percent from three-point range in the fourth en route to the victory, 64-44.
Top Performances
- Domond recorded a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds.
- Rizzitelli collected her first double-double of her career, netting 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while adding five assists, three blocks, and two steals.
- Hudson totaled nine points and 10 rebounds
- Muller added nine points while playing a game-high 35 minutes.
