Men's Soccer Shuts Out Assumption, 2-0

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team remained unblemished at John A. Darcy Field, defeating the Assumption University Greyhounds, 2-0, Wednesday evening. The Lions improved to 6-2-5, while the Greyhounds fell to 4-2-3.
 
How it Happened
  • Assumption applied pressure in the early minutes, with a pair of shots from forward Gustaf Vilgot Albert that was denied by graduate goalkeeper Nick Conklu.
  • Molloy's first shot of the evening resulted in a goal. Sophomore Gio Fabiano blasted his shot under the bar following a feed from junior Ryan Dobson to take a 1-0 lead, in the 16th minute.
  • The road team looked for the equalizer ten minutes later, but Conklu made a diving same to keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.
  • Junior Andy Blanco created a chance, but saw his opportunity go wide in the 29th minute.
  • Molloy earned themselves a corner and junior Jonas Jacobsen nearly converted an Olympico. His corner kick was saved and hit over the bar by Assumption goalkeeper George Dixon IV.
  • The Greyhounds continued to look for the tying goal, but Conklu would make his fourth save of the half in the 39th minute to keep Molloy ahead.
  • Three minutes later, junior Danny Muir sent a cross field pass to the end line that was corralled by sophomore Matt Laya-Vetell, who beat his defender and buried the second goal of the half to put Molloy ahead, 2-0, going into halftime.
  • The second half began with neither team allowing one another to gain much of advantage in the first 10 minutes.
  • Dobson sent a shot just high of the bar in the 57th minute.
  • 10 minutes later, Muir created space to put his shot on goal, but the opportunity was denied by the Greyhounds goalkeeper.
  • Neither team recorded a shot in the final 23 minutes, as Molloy went on to seal the victory, 2-0.
Top Performances
  • Fabiano scored his seventh goal of the season.
  • Laya-Vetell netted his first goal of the campaign.
  • Dobson and Muir picked up an assist each.
  • Conklu made four saves in goal to pick up his fourth shutout of the season.

Molloy returns to conference play Saturday, October 8 as they welcome in the Daemen University Wildcats on senior day. The game is scheduled to kick-off at 12:00 p.m.
