Buffalo, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team topped the Saints of D'Youville University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field. The Lions improved to 11-3-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while the Saints fell to 2-12-1 and 1-6 in league play.
How it Happened
- Molloy created the first chance 42 seconds into the contest when senior Sienna Nicolich had her shot go wide.
- Freshman Mikaela Barriga buried a pass from senior Lexi Verni into the back of the net to give Molloy a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
- Nicolich had another opportunity in the in the seventh minute, but her attempt was saved by Saints goalkeeper Kallie Regan.
- The home team evened the contest at one in the 19th minute, with a goal off the foot of Eleonora Cecchini.
- Junior Sarah Tappeto looked to regain the lead for Molloy, but her attempt was saved in the 27th minute.
- Junior Eleni Sofroniou and sophomore Alessandra Borsellino created chances in the final five minutes of the first half, but each of their shots went wide to keep the game at 1-1 going into halftime.
- The first shot of the second stanza came from Barriga who scored her second goal of the afternoon off a pass from Sofroniou. Molloy pushed ahead, 2-1, with 35 minutes remaining in the contest.
- The away team looked to pad its lead in the 68th minute, but sophomore Natalia Piotrowski had her shot saved to keep the contest at 2-1.
- D'Youville had a chance in the 82nd minute to bring the game all square, but junior goalkeeper Shannon Kilian made a key save to keep the Lions ahead.
- The Lions backline would not allow another shot attempt for the remainder of the contest to secure the victory, 2-1.
