Late Free Throws Clinch 58-57 Victory for Women's Basketball Over Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's basketball team mounted a fourth quarter comeback to top the University of Bridgeport, 58-57, this afternoon from Quealy Gymnasium. The victory sets the Lions at 7-7 on the season and 4-3 in East Coast Conference play while UB fell to 3-12 (0-8 ECC) with the loss. 


How it Happened
  • The contest was knotted six times in the opening six minutes of action before the University of Bridgeport ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run to lead, 20-12.
  • The maroon and white netted the first seven points of the second frame, including four from senior Gabriella Aspuru, to cut the deficit to just one. 
  • Bridgeport scored three-straight layups to go in front 26-19, but Molloy once again stopped the damage and worked the score within one headed into the final minute of the first half, 26-25. 
  • The visitors took a 29-25 lead into the break.
  • UB extended its lead to as much as 16, 50-34, in the third quarter on the back of a nearly 60 percent shooting percentage from the floor. 
  • Aspuru scored four points for the maroon and white to cut the lead back to single digits, 50-41, with eight minutes left in the contest.
  • Bridgeport sunk the next two baskets to lead 55-41 with just over five minutes to play.
  • Molloy began to mount its comeback, going on a 12-0 run to come within two, 55-53, headed into the final 63 seconds. 
  • A three-pointer from graduate student Safiyyah Lee brought Molloy within one, 57-56 with 53 seconds on the clock.
  • Junior Cameron Corbett grabbed an offensive rebounds in the final five seconds and was sent to the line. The guard sunk both of her attempts, giving Molloy the 58-57 victory as time expired. 

Top Performances
  • Molloy was led by 21 points from Aspuru, who also topped the squad with eight assists, four blocks, and three steals.
  • Lee netted 18 points on 50 percent shooting while pulling down six boards.
  • Corbett tallied seven points while graduate student Maya Thomas and sophomore Trinity Hudson each added five.
