Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team was defeated by the Mercy Mavericks, 61-57, Monday evening at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions fell to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in ECC play, while The Mavericks moved to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in league play.
How it Happened
- With the score tied at five, the Lions went on an 8-2 rally, led by four points from graduate student Maya Thomas, to go ahead 13-7.
- Molloy went ahead 18-13 on basket from senior Gabriella Aspuru, but Mercy scored the final six points of the first frame and led 19-18.
- The team exchanged the lead in the second quarter. The home team had a 33-31 advantage at the half.
- The Mavericks went on an 18-2 run to begin the third quarter to take a 49-35 lead.
- The away team led 51-39 at the end of 30 minutes of play.
- The Lions opened the fourth frame on a 10-0 rally, sparked by four points from junior Morgan Staab, to cut the Mercy advantage to 51-49.
- Freshman Janel Moore hit a three-pointer to cut Mercy's lead to 58-57 with 1:59 left, but the maroon and white's comeback fell short.
Top Performances
- Aspuru netted a game-high 20 points.
- Thomas tallied 10 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.
- Moore recorded 10 points, and graduate student Safiyyah Lee registered five points and 10 rebounds.
