Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The 24th-ranked Molloy women's soccer team continued their unbeaten start to conference play after taking down the D'Youville Saints, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in ECC play, while the Saints fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
How It Happened
- Molloy outshot D'Youville 18-4, including 13-2 in the first half.
- Junior Lexi Verni recorded a couple of shots on goal in the opening six minutes, but both were denied by D'Youville goalkeeper Laurie Poeller.
- In the 21st minute, junior Joanna Graca blazed past her defender on the far side and sent a low cross into the six-yard box for Verni to fire home and break the deadlock.
- 43 seconds later, Verni got through on goal and rounded the keeper. While her effort was initially cleared off the line, the rebound fell back to her and tucked it home from a tight angle to double the lead.
- In the 43rd minute, junior Annie Coogan and sophomore Sarah Teppetto each tested the keeper in quick succession, but both were stopped.
- The Lions were up 2-0 at the end of the first half.
- Graca got through on goal a few minutes into the second half, but sent her shot straight at Poeller.
- With 15 minutes to go, Coogan also went through on goal, but again shot right at Poeller.
- Molloy made it 3-0 in the 88th minute, as a deflected pass from sophomore Erin Fogarty popped up in the air and fell to Graca wide open in front of goal to slot away.
Top Performances
- Verni scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season, with all her goals so far this season coming in the past three games.
- Verni also led the team in shots with seven.
- Graca tallied her first goal and her third assist of the season.
- Fogarty registered her first point for the Lions with an assist.
- Senior Jackie Carty made three saves for her seventh shutout of the season.
