Uniondale, NY – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Bridgeport Purple Knights on senior day Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions won game one 17-4, and the second game 5-0. The maroon and white improved to 16-7 overall and 12-2 in ECC play, while the Purple Knights moved to 9-8 overall and in conference play.
Game One: Molloy 17, Bridgeport 4
- The Lions plated five runs in the first inning. Senior Sean Hogan started the scoring with an RBI single, senior Peter Theodorellis scored on an error, senior Matt Overton hit a sacrifice fly, redshirt junior Thomas Brady hit an RBI single, and junior Patrick Hoffman concluded the rally with an RBI double.
- Molloy used a seven-run third inning to extend its advantage to 12-0. Freshman Garrett Scavelli hit an RBI single, Hoffman, who was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, hit an RBI double, sophomore David Franchi hit a three-run home run, and Theodorellis and senior Jake McCarthy hit RBI singles.
- In the fourth, Franchi, who tallied two hits, five RBIs, and two runs scored, hit an RBI single, and McCarthy hit a two-RBI single to increase the lead to 15-0.
- Franchi hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and freshman Chris Einemann added an RBI single in the seventh to make it 17-1.
- Senior Timothy Panetta threw six innings gave up one run, on eight hits, and struck out 13 to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 5, Bridgeport 0
- Brady put the Lions ahead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
- Junior Robert Iadanza hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend the advantage to 2-0.
- In the fifth, McCarthy hit an RBI single, junior Matt Overton hit an RBI double, and McCarthy scored on an error to make it 5-0.
- Junior Charlie Cucchiara pitched a complete game shutout and struck out four batters.
