Poyer Homers in Softball Split at Queens

Flushing, N.Y. - The Molloy softball team split a doubleheader this afternoon at Queens College, setting the Lions' record at 12-8 overall and 3-5 in East Coast Conference play. 

Game One: Queens 7, Molloy 4

  • Sophomore Karsyn Eaton put the maroon and white on the board in the first inning with a single to left center field.
  • The Knights knotted the score in the home half of the inning, scoring on a bunt single from Marisa Sagona. 
  • Queens added to its lead in the second inning, scoring three runs on two doubles and a single. 
  • Molloy would come within two, 4-2, in the sixth inning, after senior Megan McCormack drove in Eaton with a bases-loaded ground out to second base. 
  • The home team added an additional three runs in the bottom half of the inning on two singles and a stolen base.
  • The Lions began a rally in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second. Eaton singled to right field to score junior Marissa Nicoletti before a single to left field from junior Amanda King plated redshirt senior Mikaela Tribby to set the score at 7-4, but were unable to take a lead.
  • Eaton led with three hits and two RBI on the afternoon. King and freshman Chrissie Huhn each added multiple hit efforts.
  • Senior Tonianne Larson went 1.2 innings in the loss, striking out two batters. 

Game Two: Molloy 5, Queens 2

  • The Knights would strike first, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning following an RBI double from Sagona.
  • Saigon would drive in an additional run in the third on a ground out to double the home team's lead.
  • In the fourth inning, Molloy took its first lead since the opening inning of the doubleheader following an RBI double to sophomore Akemi Poyer and a two-run single to freshman Katie Hand, putting the Lions in front, 3-2. 
  • Poyer sent the ball over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning to increase the maroon and white's lead to 5-2.
  • Senior Courtney Greene entered the circle in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning, retiring three batters in order before the game was called due to darkness, picking up her first save of the season.
  • Senior Tonianne Larson tossed five innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out three batters. 
  • Poyer had the only multi-hit effort for the Lions, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
