Caldwell, NJ – The Molloy baseball team topped the Caldwell Cougars, 17-4, Wednesday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The Lions improved to 10-5 overall, while the Cougars fell to 6-4.
How it Happened
- Caldwell jumped ahead 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the first.
- Molloy plated two runs on an error to take a 2-1 lead in the second.
- In the third, senior Matt Overton hit a two-RBI double down the right field line, and later, scored on an error to extend Molloy's advantage to 5-1.
- Redshirt junior Thomas Brady hit a sac fly, which scored senior Sean Hogan, to make it 6-1 in the fifth.
- The maroon and white tallied six runs in the eighth to increase its lead to 12-1. Senior James Messina hit a two-RBI double down the left field line, senior Jake McCarthy hit an RBI single to center, Overton blasted a two-RBI triple to right field, and Brady concluded the rally with an RBI single to center.
- The home team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
- The Lions used a five-run ninth inning to bring their lead to 17-4. Messina drove in two runs with a double down the left field line, Overton scored Messina with a single to center, and freshman Garrett Scavelli plated two runs with a single to right.
Top Performance
- Overton went 3-for-3 with five RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks.
- Messina tallied three hits, two doubles, four RBIs, two runs scored, and one stolen base.
- Brady and Scavelli registered two hits and two RBIs each.
- Junior Christopher Wiercinski pitched seven innings, gave up one run, on three hits, and struck out six to improve to 1-1 on the year.
