Baseball Tallies 35 Runs in Double-Header Sweep of D'Youville

Buffalo, NY – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the D'Youville Saints Tuesday afternoon at the Northtown Center. The Lions won the first game 17-2, and the second game 18-3. The maroon and white improved to 12-5 overall and 8-0 in ECC play, while the Saints fell to 2-15 overall and 0-11 in conference play.

Game One: Molloy 17, D'Youville 2
  • Molloy jumped ahead 1-0 on an RBI single from senior Peter Theodorellis in the first.
  • Junior Chris Peralta scored on an error to increase the Lions' advantage to 2-0.
  • The home team cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the fourth.
  • Senior Matt Overton hit an RBI single to extend the maroon and white's lead to 3-1.
  • In the sixth, senior James Messina, senior Sean Hogan, and junior Vincent Pecora recorded RBI singles, and Theodorellis scored sophomore David Franchi on a fielder's choice to make it 7-1.
  • The away team tallied eight runs in the seventh to bring the lead to 15-1. Pecora hit an RBI single, Messina and Theodorellis, who tallied two hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs, walked with the bases full, Hogan, who recorded three hits and three RBIs, hit a two-RBI single, freshman Garrett Scavelli scored a run with an RBI ground out, Pecora walked with the bases loaded, and Peralta hit a sac fly.
  • In the eighth, Franchi scored on an error, and in the ninth, the sophomore hit an RBI single to make it 17-1.
  • Graduate Student Joseph Murphy threw six innings, gave up one run on one hit, and struck out 10 to improve to 2-1 on the year.
  • Sophomore AJ Verga fanned three batters in three innings pitched for his first career save.
Game Two: Molloy 18, D'Youville 3
  • The Lions opened the scoring with three runs in the first. Scavelli hit an RBI single, Peralta hit an RBI single, and Scavelli scored on a fielding error.
  • Molloy used a seven-run second inning to make it a 10-0 contest. Franchi hit an RBI double, Franchi came home on an error, Hogan hit an RBI double, Overton hit a two-RBI single, and freshman Chris Einemann capped the rally with an RBI single.
  • In the fourth, freshman Chris Giardino hit an RBI single, and Einemann, who recorded three hits and drove in three runs, hit a two-RBI single, and Theodorellis hit an RBI single to extend the advantage to 14-0.
  • D'Youville plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Scavelli scored on a double-play to make it 15-3 Molloy in the fifth.
  • Freshman Anthony Manisero hit an RBI double in the sixth, and Scavelli, who tallied four hits, three RBIs, and three runs scored, hit a two-RBI double to make it 18-3 Lions, who have outscored their opponents 131-32 during their nine-game winning-streak.
  • Sophomore Richard Gennaro pitched four innings gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits, and struck out six to pick up his first win of the season.
