Softball Falls Twice Against Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team fell in a doubleheader to the University of Bridgeport, 9-6 after 13 innings of play, and 4-0. The Lions slipped to 8-6 (0-4 ECC) with the loss while UB improved to 4-0 (4-0 ECC).

Game One: Bridgeport 9, Molloy 6 (13 innings)
  • The Purple Knights took a 3-0 lead after the first inning on an RBI single from Kaira Ramon and a home run from Taylor Yates.
  • The visitors would add to the lead in the second inning as Sam Ferreri scored following an error by Molloy's shortstop.
  • Sophomore Karsyn Eaton started a three-run rally for the Lions with a double to center field, setting the table for freshman Katie Hand to drive her in with a double of her own. The rookie advanced to third on a single from junior Angelique Serrano.
  • A fielder's choice from sophomore Steph Conrade plated one run before sophomore Grace Rende brought the Lions within one,4-3, with a single in the second inning.
  • Hand knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth with her first career home run, sending the ball over the right field fence.
  • In the fifth inning, Hailey Kim drove in a run with a single to center field before the Purple Knights once again scored following a first and third double steal, this time capitalizing on an error from the Lions' catcher.
  • The maroon and white came within one in the bottom of the fifth, with junior Marissa Nicoletti doubling to left center before senior Courtney Greene reached on a fielding error. Junior Amanda King plated Nicoletti with a single through the right side.
  • The Lions tied the score at six in the sixth inning on a double from freshman Chrissie Huhn, plating Rende who drew a walk.
  • The teams would force extra innings, playing five innings of scoreless softball, despite combining for 11 runners left on base, including Molloy leaving the bases loaded in both the 11th and 12th innings.
  • Bridgeport broke the stalemate in the 13th, biting the Lions once again with the first and third play from the fifth inning, prompting an error to Molloy's catcher. An error from the second baseman later in the inning would add two additional runs, setting the score at 9-6.
  • King led off with a single in the home half of the inning, advancing to third, but the Lions were unable to overcome the deficit, falling in the marathon contest.
  • Hand led with three hits and two RBI with Nicoletti, King, and Eaton each adding two hits. Hunh, Serrano, and Conrade (2) each picked up stolen bases.
  • Greene tossed five innings in the start while King went eight innings, striking out five in the loss.
