Baseball Picks Up Two Wins Against Queens

Uniondale, NY – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Queens Knights Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions won the first game 15-4 and the second game 9-1. The Lions improved to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in ECC play, while the Knights fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Game One: Molloy 15, Queens 4
  • Molloy jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on RBI singles from senior Jake McCarthy and redshirt junior Thomas Brady.
  • The Lions, who tied a program record with 13 walks, used a seven-run third inning to increase their lead to 9-0. Senior Matt Overton scored on a throwing error, and Brady and freshman Garrett Scavelli scored on a wild pitches to make it 5-0. Senior Peter Theodorellis, who recorded two hits, drove in two runs, and scored three runs, hit a two-RBI single, and Overton, who tallied two hits and three RBIs, blasted a two-RBI triple to cap the rally.
  • Queens tallied two runs in the fourth to cut the advantage to 9-2.
  • In the fourth, Scavelli scored on a throwing error, senior Sean Hogan and Overton hit RBI singles, and senior Jake McCarthy hit a sac fly to extend the lead to 13-2.
  • Junior Vincent Pecora scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, and Hogan scored Anthony E. Vano to put the home team ahead 15-4.
  • Graduate student Timothy Panetta struck out nine batters in seven innings pitched to improve to 4-1 on the season.
  • Freshman Ryan Hynes tallied one strikeout in one inning pitched, and senior Billy Wildeman fanned three batters in an inning pitched.
Game Two: Molloy 9, Queens 1
  • Junior Patrick Hoffman hit an RBI single, and sophomore David Franchi hit a two-RBI single in the second to put Molloy up 3-0.
  • McCarthy hit an RBI single in the fifth to extend the Lions' advantage to 4-0.
  • The maroon and white plated five runs in the sixth to make it 9-0. Theodorellis collected a two-RBI single, Hogan hit a two-RBI double, and Hogan scored on a throwing error.
  • Queens scored a run in the seventh.
  • Sophomore Charlie Cucchiara threw seven innings, gave up one run, on three hits, and struck out nine to move to 1-1 on the season.

Molloy travels to Queens to conclude the three-game series Monday, April 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
