Softball Drops a Pair of One Run Games at Caldwell

Caldwell, N.J. - The softball team dropped back-to-back one-run games against Caldwell University this afternoon, including one in extra innings, in the Lions' final non-conference series of the regular season. Molloy now sits at 16-12 on the season while the Cougars improved to 13-8-1. 

Game One: Caldwell 6, Molloy 5
  • Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on back-to-back doubles.
  • The home team would increase its lead to 4-0 after three innings of play following a three-run home run.
  • The Lions would get on the board in the fourth inning, with junior Amanda King plating senior Courtney Greene with an RBI double to center field.
  • The Cougars' offense continued in the home half of the inning, adding an additional run on a solo home run.
  • The maroon and white rallied in the seventh inning, starting with a lead-off solo home run from freshman Katie Hand to come within three, 5-2.
  • Singles from King, junior Marissa Nicoletti, and sophomore Grace Rende loaded the bases with one out before a pinch hit ground out to senior Megan McCormack scored King, bringing Molloy within two.
  • Freshman Chrissie Huhn knotted the score with a two-run single through the right side.
  • A hit batter, and a bunt single led to runners on second and third before Caldwell won, 6-5, with a walk-off single to left field.
  • King and Huhn each tallied three hits, with King for 3-for-3 and Huhn picking up two RBI and a stolen base.
  • Greene tossed 6.1 innings, striking out four batters. 
Game Two: Caldwell 7, Molly 6 (8 Innings)
  • The home team once again took an early lead, hitting a three-run home run in just the fourth at bat of the contest.
  • The next five innings would pass without any scoring with the teams combining for just five hits.
  • Singles from Rende, Huhn, and sophomore Emma Bachman loaded the bases in the sixth inning before sophomore Karsyn Eaton drove in two runs with a double to right field.
  • The following at bat, Greene tied the contest with a sacrifice fly before Eaton gave Molloy its first lead, scoring on a wild pitch.
  • For the second time on the day, McCormack stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter with runners in scoring position and gave Molloy a two-run lead, 5-3, with a single through the right side.
  • Hand added to the maroon and white's lead in the top of the seventh with a double to left field. 
  • The Cougars rallied in the home half of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits, including two RBI singles to force extra innings.
  • Despite a single from sophomore Akemi Poyer in the top of the eighth, Molloy was unable to plate a run. Caldwell led off its half of the inning with a bunt single and sacrifice bunt. The home team would walk-off with a single through the left side, claiming the 7-6 victory.
  • Huhn and Nicoletti each went 3-for-4 to lead the maroon and white while Hand added two hits. 
  • King tossed 6.1 innings in the circle, striking out three batters. Greene threw the final 1.1 innings, fanning two batters.
