King Grand Slam Gives Softball Extra Inning Victory in Split at Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. - The softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport this afternoon, taking the first contest 6-2 in a nine-inning first game before falling 6-5 in the second contest. The Lions sit at 14-10 on the season and 4-6 in East Coast Conference play while the Purple Knights now sit at 9-1 both overall and in league play. 

Game One: Molloy 6, Bridgeport 2 (9 Innings)
  • Bridgeport took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play with a sacrifice fly from Elyssa Marmolejo and a solo home run from Taylor Yates. 
  • Molloy would tie the contest in the third inning with singles from freshman Chrissie Huhn and sophomore Karsyn Eaton setting up senior Courtney Greene for a two-run double. 
  • The Lions had runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to score while Greene held the Purple Knights to two hits through the final four innings, forcing the contest to extra innings. 
  • The maroon and white threatened in the eighth inning with a lead-off double to redshirt senior Mikaela Tribby and a wild pitch, but the score remained knotted, 2-2.
  • A walk to sophomore Emma Bachman and fielder's choice sacrifice bunts from Huhn and Eaton set up junior Amanda King, who cleared the bases with a grand slam to put the Lions in front, 6-2. 
  • UB went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, giving Molloy the victory.
  • Greene tossed a compete game, allowing just four total hits while striking out four. The senior went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI while King drove in four after going 2-for-5. 

Game Two: Bridgeport 6, Molloy 5
  • The Purple Knights plated three runs to start the contest on a bases-clearing double from Samantha Schiebe. 
  • Kaira Ramon added a fourth run in the bottom of the third with a double. 
  • King once again cleared the bases with a triple in the top of the fourth, scoring Greene and Tribby. Junior Marissa Nicoletti brought the Lions within one on a fielder's choice to score King and set the score at 4-3. 
  • UB scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to make it 5-3.
  • King doubled to lead off the sixth inning, moving to third on a wild pitch before freshman Katie Hand drove her in with a single to bring Molloy within one. After stealing second and third, Hand scored on a single to Huhn to knot the score. 
  • Bridgeport took the 6-5 victory on a sacrifice fly from Sam Ferreri in the bottom of the sixth.
  • King led with three hits, driving in two runs. The junior tossed four innings, striking out two in the start while Greene took the loss after two innings of relief.
