Softball Drops Doubleheader at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The softball team opened East Coast Conference play this afternoon at Mercy College, falling in both contests, 4-3 and 6-3. Molloy fell to 8-4 on the season with the losses while the Mavericks picked up the team's first two wins of the season to improve to 2-2.

Game One: Mercy 4, Molloy 3
  • The Lions' bats went right to work, with freshman Chrissie Huhn leading the contest off with a double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Junior Marissa Nicoletti walked in the second at bat before stealing second. A misplay by the Mavericks' catcher allowed Huhn to score and Nicoletti to advance to third.
  • Senior Courtney Greene drove in the third baseman with a single to right field, giving Molloy a 2-0 lead.
  • The home team would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on a single from Danielle Burgos.
  • Huhn hit her first career home run in the top of the second to regain the two-run lead for the maroon and white.
  • Two errors in the bottom of the third allowed the Mavericks to knot the score, 3-3, on a two-run double from Ylannah Bowman.
  • After three scoreless innings, the Lions were down to the final three outs. Nicoletti and Greene reached scoring position following a single, walk, and passed ball, but back-to-back strikeouts kept the score knotted at three.
  • A lead-off triple set the table for a walk-off single to Burgos to give the Mavericks the 4-3 victory.
  • Huhn and Nicoletti each recorded two hits while Greene fanned six batters, allowing two earned runs.
Game Two: Mercy 6, Molloy 3
  • A single from Huhn and walk to Nicoletti set up Greene for an RBI single to left field to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mavericks responded with a single and heads up base running, knotting the score when Alexis Crawford stole home. The home team would take a lead in the next at bat with an RBI double to Samantha Franck.
  • Sophomore pinch runner Akemi Poyer stole home in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead in half.
  • The Lions continued to chip away at the lead in the fifth inning, as Greene drove in Nicoletti with an RBI double to left center, bringing Molloy within one, 4-3.
  • The Mavericks plated two runs on a single from Crawford to take a 6-3 lead.
  • The maroon and white went down in order in the top of the seventh, giving Mercy its second-straight win.
