Uniondale, NY – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the College of Staten Island Dolphins Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions won the first game 9-4, and the second game 9-0. The Lions improved to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in ECC play, while the Dolphins fell to 0-3 overall and in league play.
Game One: Molloy 9, CSI 4
- The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Matt Overton walked with the bases loaded to start the scoring. Redshirt junior Thomas Brady hit a two-RBI single to center field to increase the lead to 3-0. Brady then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.
- Junior Patrick Hoffman hit an RBI single, and freshman Garrett Scavelli hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Overton, to extend the lead to 6-0 in the third.
- In the fourth, senior Sean Hogan hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 7-0.
- Junior Chris Peralta scored Brady, who tallied two RBIs and two runs scored, to make it 8-0 in the seventh.
- CSI plated four runs in the eight to cut the Lions' advantage to 8-4.
- Senior James Messina walked with the bases loaded in the ninth to bring Molloy's lead to 9-4.
- Senior Joe Minucci threw six shutout innings and struck out nine batters to improve to 2-1 on the season.
- Junior Billy Wildeman struck out two batters, and senior Ryan Karp fanned one batter in an inning pitched.
Game Two: Molloy 9, CSI 0
- Hogan hit a sac fly, which scored Messina and made it 1-0 in the first.
- The Lions plated four runs in the fourth to bring their advantage to 5-0. Brady hit an RBI single, Scavelli hit a sac fly, which scored Overton, and sophomore David Franchi and senior Peter Theodorellis tallied RBI singles.
- In the seventh, junior Vincent Pecora hit an RBI single, and Messina walked with the bases full to extend the lead to 7-0.
- Messina, who registered two hits and two RBIs, and Theodorellis, who collected three hits and drove in two runs, added RBIs in the seventh to make it 9-0.
- Graduate student Joseph Murphy threw five shutout innings and struck out six to improve to 1-1 on the year.
