Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The men's lacrosse team fell to #8 Mercy College, 16-7, in a St. Patrick's Day showdown this evening. The Lions tumbled to 1-4 while the Mavericks improved to 3-0.
How it Happened
- Mercy got started fast, scoring the first six goals of the game, With less than a minute left in the first quarter, freshman midfielder Chris Delaney found the back of the net and to make it 6-1.
- Mercy struck first again the second frame, but Delaney netted his second goal of the game thanks to an assist from senior attacker Nick Del Giorno to make it 7-2. Mercy's Matt Gaughan scored a few minutes later to give Mercy the 8-2 lead at the half.
- The third quarter started with a bang for the maroon and white when freshman attacker Michael Rodin scored on the man-up situation and Del Giorno tacked in his first goal of the game to make it 9-4.
- After another Mercy goal, Molloy scored three of the final five goals of the quarter thanks to a pair of goals from senior midfielder Jack Egan and another tally from Delaney to cut the deficit to 11-7.
- Mercy scored one more goal in the third and all four goals in the fourth quarter to hold on to win 16-7.
Key Performers
- Delaney secured his first hat trick of the season with a three-goal performance while Egan scored twice with Rodin and Del Giorno each chipping in one goal.
- Sophomore defender Ryan O'Neil had four ground balls with freshman goalie Adam Hyman ranking second with three. Hyman also was tied with senior midfielder Darryl Hilaire for the team lead in caused turnovers with two during the game.
- Hyman had another double digit save performance with his 12 during the contest.
What's Next
The maroon and white will head on the road for the first time this season when they travel to Frostburg State University on Saturday (Mar. 27) for the team's first East Coast Conference match. Opening face-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
