Offense Powers Baseball Past Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team topped the Adelphi Panthers, 11-4, Tuesday afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field. The Lions improved to 3-3, while the Panthers fell to 2-3.

How it Happened
  • Senior Matt Overton hit an RBI single in the top of the first to put the maroon and white ahead 1-0.
  • Adelphi plated two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • The Lions scored three runs in the second to make it 4-2. Senior James Messina grounded out to the shortstop, which scored junior Patrick Hoffman. Freshman Garrett Scavelli scored on a wild pitch, and senior Sean Hogan capped the inning with an RBI single to center field.
  • The Panthers tallied a run in the bottom of the second to cut Molloy's lead to 4-3.
  • In the fourth, redshirt junior Thomas Brady hit an RBI single to left field, and an error brought home two runs to extend the lead to 7-3.
  • Brady grounded out to second in the seventh, which scored Hogan and made it 8-3.
  • Messina hit an RBI double, and senior Peter Theodorellis hit a two-RBI single in the eighth to put the away team up 11-3.
  • The home team added a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Top Performances
  • Hogan recorded four hits, drove in one run, and scored two runs.
  • Messina, Theodorellis, and Brady tallied two RBIs each.
  • Senior Jake McCarthy collected three hits, and Scavelli and Overton added two hits apiece for the Lions, who registered 17 hits.
  • Senior Joe Minucci pitched five innings, gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits, and struck out 10 batters to improve to 1-1 on the season.
  • Junior Christopher Wiercinski fanned three batters in two innings, and graduate student Joseph Murphy registered two strikeouts in one inning.
Up Next
The maroon and white returns home to play Bloomfield tomorrow, March 17. The game with the Bears is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Mitchel Field.
