Men's Basketball Slips Against Roberts Wesleyan, 86-80

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The men's basketball team fell in a closely contested bout with the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College, 86-80. With the loss, Molloy fell to 3-6 on the season and 2-5 in East Coast Conference play while Roberts improved to 7-6 (5-4 ECC). 

How it Happened
  • Roberts took an early 10-4 lead, but back-to-back three-pointers from junior Frankie Phelan and sophomore James Montgomery and a layup from freshman Darren Fergus knotted the score, 12-12.
  • The teams continued to exchange leads, tying the score on four subsequent occasions, including 30-30 with 2:50 remaining in the first half.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from senior Steven Torre put the home team in front, 36-32, but late foul shooting from the visitors cut Molloy's lead to 36-35 at the break.
  • Tied 39-39, the maroon and white pulled ahead to its largest lead of the contest, 48-41. 
  • The  teams found themselves tied three times through a three minute period, including 59-59 with just under 11 minutes remaining in the contest.
  • The Redhawks went on a 12-4 run to take a 71-63 lead with 8:11 left to play. 
  • The Lions would score nine unanswered points to knot the score at 76 with just under four minutes left, but a 7-0 run from Roberts Wesleyan put the visitors in front, 83-76, with 90 ticks on the clock, a lead Molloy was unable to overcome.
Top Performances
  • Montgomery led the Lions with 20 points and nine rebounds while adding three assists and two steals. 
  • Fergus added 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Torre went 4-of-7 from long distance for 12 points to go with three assists.
  • Phelan led the team with seven assists while adding nine points and two steals.
  • Junior Pano Pavlidis recorded two blocks and pulled down five boards.

The Lions and Redhawks will face off again tomorrow (Feb. 28) at 11:00 a.m. in the regular season finale.
