Muller’s Double-Double Propels Men’s Basketball Over Adelphi, 69-64

The men's basketball team defeated Adelphi University, 69-64, in a non-conference battle this evening inside Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 3-9 with the win, while the Panthers fall to 6-4.
 
How It Happened
  • A pair of free throws and a layup from senior Steven Torre got the Lions off to a quick start leading, 4-0 with 17:52 to play in the first half.
  • An 11-5 run by the home team, capped by a three-point basket from freshman Matt Lane, extended the Lions' lead to 10, 15-5, with over 10 minutes to go in the opening stanza.
  • A three-point shot from the Panthers' guard Isaiah Salter trimmed the Molloy lead to six, 23-17, with under six minutes to play.
  • Molloy closed the first half on a 15-7 scoring run, led by junior William Muller, who scored 10 points, including six from behind the arc. The Lions went into the locker room holding a 38-21 lead.
  • The two teams traded baskets in the first four minutes of the second half, with Molloy holding a 45-28 advantage.
  • A jumper from Adelphi guard Ronnie Silva closed the home team's lead to 10, 47-37, with 12:57 remaining on the clock.
  • A two-on-one layup from freshman Kenny Lazo extended the Lions' lead to 13, 53-40, with 9:17 left.
  • The road team battled back, putting together an 18-4 scoring run over the next five minutes, taking a 58-57 lead with over four minutes to go.
  • The maroon and white reclaimed the lead, 64-62, following a layup from graduate student Justin Caldwell and a pair of free throws from junior Frankie Phelan with 1:17 remaining.
  • With 34 seconds on the clock, freshman Darren Fergus hit a step-back three to put the Lions ahead by five, 67-62.
  • Torre would go ahead and ice the game at the foul line, draining two free-throws to close out the 69-64 victory.
 
Top Performances
  • Muller had a game-high 23 points shooting 55 percent from the field while securing a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Fergus netted 14 points, including shooting three-of-six from behind the three-point line, while adding five assists and pulling down five rebounds.
  • Torre tallied nine points, going a perfect four-of-four from the foul line.
  • Lane collected four points and brought down nine rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

The Lions return to ECC play, Saturday, January 8, when the Mavericks of Mercy College pay a visit to Rockville Centre. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
