Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's basketball team fell to the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 72-69, Wednesday evening in its ECC-opener at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions dropped to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Firebirds improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.
How it Happened
- Despite shooting 50 percent from the floor, the Lions were down 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Firebirds led by as many as eight in the second quarter, before junior Cameron Corbett hit a three-pointer to only trail by four points, 30-26, with 3:14 left.
- The Firebirds went on a 8-2 run to extend the lead 38-27 at the break.
- In the third quarter, Molloy twice cut its deficit down to six points, but UDC scored the final six points of the quarter to bring its lead back into double digits, 57-45.
- Entering the final six minutes of the contest, the Firebirds had a 15-point advantage,67-52, their largest lead of the game.
- The Lions stormed back by outscoring UDC 14-2 over the next four minutes, with Corbett knocking down a three-pointer with 1:13 left to trail 69-66.
- After each side made a free throw, senior Gabriella Aspuru made a layup to make it a one-point game, 70-69, with two seconds to go.
- UDC sunk two free throws to close out the game.
Top Performances
- Aspuru led the team with 21 points and three blocks, while adding five rebounds and four assists.
- Sophomore Trinity Hudson tallied a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
- Corbett also reached double digits with 10 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
