#18 Women’s Soccer Clinches Top Spot in ECC With 6-0 Win Over STAC On Senior Day

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The 18th-ranked Molloy women's soccer team clinched the top seed for the East Coast Conference Championship and a share of the regular season title after defeating the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions finished the regular season at 15-2 overall and 8-1 in ECC play, while the Spartans fell to 4-11 overall and 2-7 in league play.
 
How It Happened
  • Molloy outshot STAC 21-2, including 12-1 in the first half.
  • The Lions got on the board in the 5th minute after senior Dana Poetzsch rounded the goalkeeper and fired it into the empty net.
  • Poetzsch doubled the Lions' lead in the 22nd minute after being played through on goal by junior Annie Coogan.
  • Coogan then got on the scoresheet in the 37th minute after slotting home a low cross from junior Joanna Graca.
  • The Lions were up 3-0 heading into the break.
  • In the 58th minute, junior Lexi Verni's effort from 20 yards out was initially tipped by the Spartans' goalkeeper, but it bounced in to make it 4-0.
  • Freshman Nicole Fabris netted Molloy's fifth with 20 minutes to go after smashing it in from the edge of the box.
  • In the 83rd minute, the Lions tallied their sixth and final goal on the day through sophomore Brenna Glover.
  • The Lions tied the single-season program records for both wins (15) and shutouts (12).
 
Top Performances
  • Poetzsch scored twice to bring her total to eight goals on the season. She also registered one assist, which is her fifth of the season.
  • Coogan tallied her third goal of the season to go along with two assists.
  • Verni netted her 12th goal of the season, which still leads the ECC.
  • Fabris and Glover each scored their fourth goals of the season.
  • Senior Carli Fonseca tallied her first career point with an assist.
  • Graca registered her fifth assist of the season.
  • Fogarty recorded her second assist of the season.
  • Sophomore Shannon Kilian recorded the shutout in her first career start.
