Poetzsch's Hat Trick Lifts #1 Women's Soccer Past #4 Roberts Wesleyan in ECC Semifinal

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The top-seeded Molloy women's soccer team defeated the #4 Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 5-0, Thursday evening in the ECC Semifinal at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions, who are ranked #16 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and #3 in the East Region,  improved to 16-2, while the Redhawks fell to 7-8-1. The maroon and white set the program record for wins (16) and shutouts (13). 

How it Happened 
  • The Lions started the scoring in the ninth minute. After being fouled in the box, senior Dana Poetzsch converted a penalty kick.
  • Molloy increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 14th minute. Sophomore Eleni Sofroniou sent a pass from junior Lexi Verni into the back of the net. 
  • In the 44th minute, Poetzsch scored on a pass from junior Joanna Graca
  • Roberts Wesleyan created a chance in the 47th minute, but senior Jackie Carty punched the shot from Abigail Sindoni over the crossbar. 
  • Poetzsch tallied another goal off of a pass from Graca in the 50th minute. 
  • Carty made a diving save on Jessica Savage in the 85th minute. 
  • Freshman Alessandra Borsellino blasted a pass from junior Sienna Nicolich in for a goal in the 87th minute. 
Top Performances
  • Poetzsch netted three goals. The Hicksville, N.Y. native is second on the team in goals (11) and is tied for the team lead in points (27). 
  • Sofroniou tallied her second goal of the season. The Dix Hills, N.Y. native has scored three of her four career goals in the postseason and the month of November. 
  • Borsellino scored her second goal of the season. 
  • Graca recorded two assists and now leads the team with seven. 
  • Verni registered one assist and is tied for the team lead in points (27).
  • Nicholich logged her first helper with the maroon and white.  
  • Carty made two saves for her 10th shutout of the season. 
Up Next 
The Lions will look to defend their title Sunday, November 14 against #2 Mercy at 12:00 p.m. in the ECC Final at John A. Darcy Field.
