Men's Soccer Draws STAC on Senior Day; Secures #3 Seed in ECC Championship

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team and the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans played to a 1-1 draw on senior day Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions moved 9-6-3 overall and 5-2-2 in ECC play, while the Spartans moved to 9-3-3 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play. The result earned the maroon and white the #3 seed in the East Coast Conference Championship.

How it Happened
  • Graduate student Peter Meyer created the Lions' first chance in the fourth minute, but his header from six yards out sailed over the net.
  • In the sixth minute, graduate student Nick Conklu denied an opportunity from Christian Greenidge.
  • Molloy created two chances in the 31st minute. First, senior Kenneth Garcia moved in the box and had his shot stopped. Then, graduate student Jesse Schleeper gathered the rebound, but his try was denied by STAC keeper Asier Vegas.
  • The maroon and white generated another opportunity in the 42nd minute as graduate student Genarro Vilardi had a header cleared off the line by Vegas.
  • The Lions outshot the Spartans 6-2 in the opening stanza, but the match was scoreless at the break.
  • In the 67th minute, Schleeper made a run down the left-side and fired a shot that was tipped away. On the ensuing corner, there was a handball in the box, which led to Meyer putting the home team ahead 1-0 on a penalty kick.
  • STAC knotted the match, 1-1, on a goal from Jorge Umana in the 80th minute.
  • The match was even after 90 minutes of play.
  • After STAC outshot Molloy 2-0 in the first overtime, Meyer fired a shot off the crossbar in the second extra session.

  • Meyer leads the team in goals (6) and points (14).
  • Conklu made three saves.
  • Schleeper recorded three shots, two on goal.
