Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's basketball team downed #25 Dominican, 71-63, this afternoon from Quealy Gymnasium to improve to 3-3 on the season. This marks the first time that the maroon and white defeated a nationally-ranked opponent since the 2016-17 season.
How it Happened
- The teams shot a nearly equal 30 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes of play, but the Chargers took a 15-14 lead on a last-second layup to end the opening frame.
- The score would be tied three times in the first half of the second quarter, including as late as 20-20 with just under five minutes to play in the half.
- Dominican led by as much as seven, 29-22, in the final two minutes before field goals from freshman Janel Moore and graduate student Safiyyah Lee, paired with a three-pointer from graduate student Maya Thomas brought the home team within two at the break, 31-29.
- Molloy went on a 17-6 run to start the third quarter, including 13 points from senior Gabriella Aspuru, to lead 46-37.
- The maroon and white limited the visitors to just four field goals in the frame, letting them shoot just 26 percent from the field, to lead 51-44 after 30 minutes.
- Dominican worked the score to within three, 55-52, midway through the fourth quarter, but a layup from Aspuru and three-pointer from junior Cameron Corbett put Molloy in front 60-52 with four minutes remaining.
- The Chargers would come within one, 60-59, before foul shooting down the stretch sealed the victory in favor of the Lions, 71-63.
Top Performances
- Aspuru netted a career-high 27 points on 11-of-22 shooting to go with nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Lee tallied a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go with a game-high three blocks as well as two steals and two assists.
- Corbett joined the duo in double digits with 11 points while adding six rebounds and two assists.
- Thomas dished out five helpers to go with seven points and five boards.
