Sparkill, N.Y. –The #3 Molloy men's soccer team defeated the #1 St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 7-6, in penalty kicks to win the 2021 East Coast Conference title. The championship is the maroon and white's first ECC crown since 2008.
How it Happened
- The Lions struck first in the third minute. Sophomore Danny Muir touched in a corner kick from senior Oscar Magnusson.
- In the 29th minute, graduate student Nick Conklu made a diving save on Jorge Umana.
- Unama tied the match at one in the 32nd minute.
- The match was knotted, 1-1, at the break.
- Conklu made another save on Cole Allen in the 61st minute.
- With 10:53 left in the second half, the match went to a weather delay.
- After the delay, the Lions created two chances. Graduate student Jesse Schleeper had a shot stopped, and STAC goalie Asier Vegas denied the rebound attempt from graduate student Genarro Vilardi in the 84th minute.
- Magnusson had a try denied in the final seconds of the first overtime.
- In the 104th minute, Muir had two headers stopped off of back-to-back corners.
- After 110 minutes, the match went to penalty kicks.
- Vilardi, graduate student Peter Meyer, and Schleeper all scored in the first three rounds of pks to keep the score even at three.
- Down 4-3, junior J.P. Rodriguez kept the match alive.
- Sophomore Andy Blanco and graduate student Danel Calvillo netted goals to even the kicks, 6-6.
- Conklu started the eighth round with a stop, and sophomore Jonas Jacobsen secured the championship for the Lions.
