Six Net Goals in #19 Women's Soccer's Win Over CSI

Staten Island, N.Y. – The #19 Molloy women's soccer team defeated the College of Staten Island Dolphins, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Dolphin Soccer Park. The Lions improved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in ECC play, while CSI fell to 3-13-1 overall and 2-5-1 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The Lions jumped ahead 1-0 after senior Dana Poetzsch scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute. 
  • In the 32nd minute, junior Sienna Nicolich took a pass from sophomore Sarah Tappeto and found the back of net.
  • The maroon and white led 2-0 at the half.
  • Molloy extended its advantage to 3-0 in the 46th minute. Junior Lexi Verni scored on an assist from Poetzsch.
  • In the 51st minute, Tappeto set up a goal from sophomore Lindsey McCarthy to make it 4-0.
  • Sophomore Eleni Sofroniou scored in the 82nd minute, and sophomore Alessandra Borsellino tallied a goal in the 85th minute to extend the advantage to 6-0.
Top Performances
  • Poetzsch is second on the team in goals (6) and tied for the team lead in assists (4). The senior has tallied a goal in four of the last five matches.
  •  Nicholich netted her third goal of the season.
  • Verni found the back of the net for the 11th time this season, which leads the ECC.
  • McCarthy tallied her second goal of the season and the third of her career.
  • Sofroniou scored her second goal of the season and the fourth of her career.
  • Borsellino found the back of the net for the first time of her career, and Tapetto tallied two assists and is tied for the team lead (4).
  • The Lions recorded their 11th shutout of the season.

The maroon and white return home to play St. Thomas Aquinas on senior day Saturday, November 6. The match with the Spartans is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
