Volleyball Defeats Bridgeport in Five-Set Thriller

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy volleyball team topped the Bridgeport Purple Knights in a five-set thriller Saturday afternoon at Quealey Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in ECC play, while the Purple Knights fell to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

How it Happened
 
  • In the first set, Bridgeport jumped out to a 9-4 lead.
  • With the score 11-10, the Purple Knight recorded four straight points to increase their lead to 15-10.
  • Down 22-18, the Lions scored five of the next six points to even the set, 23-23.
  • The visitors tallied the next two points to secure the set.
  • The teams traded the lead to begin the second stanza.
  • With Bridgeport ahead 10-8, the Lions scored the next four points led by two kills from junior Kathleen Doherty.
  • The away took an 18-14 lead.
  • Down 21-18, Molloy went on a 6-1 rally to go up 24-22.
  • After three consecutive points from UB, the Lions tallied three straight points led by two kills from sophomore Colleen Moulder.
  • With the third frame even, 11-11, the maroon and white went ahead 15-11, sparked by two aces from freshman Rebecca Meier.
  • Doherty tallied three kills in a row to increase the host's advantage to 18-12 en route to a 25-22 win.
  • The teams battled again in the fourth set. With the away team up 17-11, Molloy recorded four consecutive points.
  • The Purple Knights opened up a 24-17 lead to secure the set.
  • The teams traded points in the fifth set. Moulder registered a kill to make it 7-6 Lions.
  • Down 10-9, the home team scored the next three points.
  • Behind 16-15, graduate student Kassie Akouri Tejedor, Meier, and Moulder picked up kills to seal the deal for the maroon and white.
Top Performances
 
  • Doherty led the team with 18 kills.
  • Moulder recorded 14 kills, and senior Graciela Cruz and sophomore Chye Davis added 11 kills each.
  • Akouri Tejedor logged 47 assists and nine kills.

The Lions travel to play Roberts Wesleyan Saturday, October 9. The match with the Redhawks is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
