Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded men's basketball team hosts fifth-seeded New York Tech tonight at Quealy Gymnasium in the quarterfinal round of the East Coast Conference Men's Basketball Championship at 7:30 p.m. The winner of this evening's contest will advance to take on top-seeded University of Bridgeport on Saturday (Mar. 7) at 5:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C. in the semifinal. The ECC Champion will be crowned on Sunday (Mar. 8) at 2:35 p.m. from our nation's capital.
Regarding the Lions
- This is Molloy's fourth-straight ECC Tournament appearance, winning the program's first-ever championship and NCAA Tournament berth just one year ago.
- The Lions posted an 11-16 record this season, going 7-9 in ECC play. The team secured a home contest after upsetting nationally-ranked University of Bridgeport, 95-88, on the floor of Quealy Gymnasium, snapping the Purple Knight's 17-game winning streak and perfect league record.
- As a team, the maroon and white's rebounding has been a cornerstone of the team's success, ranking fifth in the nation with 42.44 rebounds per game, ninth in defensive rebounds per game (29.19), and 20th in offensive rebounds per game (13.26).
- Senior guard Nick Corbett has excelled in his final season with the Lions, ranking in the top-25 in the nation in field goal attempts (494, 10th), points per game (24.0, 11th), total points (647, 19th), and total field goals made (222, 23rd). He also ranks in the top-50 in the nation in three-point field goal attempts, minutes per game, three-point field goals per game, and total three-point field goals made.
- Corbett enters this evening's contest just nine points shy of the 2,000 point mark ,something that has only been done four times in the league's history. The senior needs 21 points to top John Petrucelli's 2,011 career point record and become the program's all-time leading scorer.
- Sophomore Pano Pavlidis currently ranks in the top-100 in total blocks (35) and blocked shots per game (1.40).
- Molloy holds an even 31-31 record all-time against the Bears, dating back to the 1992-93 season. This season, the teams split the series, with New York Tech taking an overtime victory, 72-70, in the most recent contest. The Lions had won the previous four matchups and seven of the last 10.
- Corbett netted 34 points in the latest matchup with Tech, going 15-of-16 from the foul line. Redshirt junior Justin Caldwell pulled down 10 rebounds in the effort.
Concerning the Bears
- New York Tech ended the season with a thrilling over-time victory over Daemen College, 85-81, to return to the postseason for the first time since the 2014-15 season. The Bears finished the season with a record of 7-21 and 5-7 in league play.
- Jeffrey Hayden topped the team both offensively and defensively with 24 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. The redshirt senior leads the Bears with 17.1 points per game.
- As a program, the Bears rank 41st in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (27.68), led by Opong Bramble, who enters this evening averaging 7.1 per game.
- Marcus Saint-Furcy sealed Tech's spot in the playoffs with his game-winning basket in overtime. The guard tallied 12 points in the game, seven of which came in the extra frame, while dishing out eight assists.
- Laurynas Stonkus topped the Bears in the latest contest with the Lions, scoring 19 points.
