Iadanza's Walk-off Single Lifts Baseball Past Wilmington in Extra Innings, 9-8

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Molloy baseball team topped the Wilmington Wildcats, 9-8, in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at the Ripken Experience.  The Lions improved to 2-1, while the Wildcats fell to 1-2.

How it Happened
  • In the bottom of the first, senior James Messina walked to start the inning and junior Peter Theodorellis and senior Sean Hogan singled to load the bases. With the bases full, junior Matt Overton grounded out, which scored Messina and put the Lions ahead 1-0.
  • Wilmington plated three runs in the second and third innings to take a 6-1 lead.
  • After the Wildcats made it 7-1 in the fifth, sophomore Robert Iadanza hit a three-run home run to right field to make it a 7-4 game.
  • Redshirt sophomore Thomas Brady hit an RBI single in the sixth to cut the Wildcats' advantage to 7-5.
  • In the seventh, Hogan hit a two-run homer to left to knot the score, 7-7.
  • Wilmington took an 8-7 lead in the eighth.
  • Messina hit a solo shot to left in the ninth to even the score at eight.
  • The Lions loaded the bases in the 10th, and Iadanza drilled a single up-the-middle lifting the team to a 9-8 victory.
Top Performances
  • Iadanza tallied a career-high four RBIs and tied a career-high with two hits.
  • Messina went 2-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored.
  • Brady and Hogan recorded two hits and drove in one run, and sophomore Chris Peralta registered two hits.
  • Sophomore Christopher Wiercinski threw 5.2 innings, gave up one run, on five hits, and stuck out four batters to go along with two pickoffs for his first collegiate win.
