Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team defeated the Stonehill Skyhawks, 1-0, Friday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 1-0, while the Skyhawks fell to 0-1. The win marked the first time the maroon and white won a season-opener since 2005.

How it Happened

• Molloy took two of the contests' first three shots.
• In the 19^th minute, junior Dana Poetzsch found the back of the net to put the Lions' ahead 1-0.
• Stonehill's best chance of the first half came in the 41^st minute. Junior goalkeeper Jackie Carty denied Jenna Nasuti and Caitlin Regan on consecutive shots.
• The Skyhawks, who outshot the Lions 4-2 in the second stanza, created a chance to knot the match in the 87^th minute, but Carty stopped the touch from Kayla Henry inside the box.

• Poetzsch, who led the team in scoring the last two seasons, netted her first goal of the season.
• Freshman Sarah Tappeto tallied her first collegiate assist.
• Carty made eight saves for her first shutout of 2019.
• Graduate student Kelsie Moinzadeh recorded two shots on goal in her Molloy debut.

Coach's Comments

• "It was a quality result against a quality team," head coach Steve Price said. "In the first half, we were really good, and in the second half, they pinned us back, but the girls were resilient. We kept our back line in shape, and Jackie made a couple of amazing saves. Everybody worked their socks off. It was a great way to start the season."
