Four-Goal First Half Leads Women's Soccer Past Caldwell

Caldwell, N.J. – The Molloy women's soccer team defeated the Caldwell Cougars, 4-0, at Caldwell Field Wednesday afternoon. The Lions improved to 3-1-1 with the victory, while the Cougars fell to 1-2.

How it Happened
  • Caldwell created the first chance of the contest. Sarah Costanza had her try punched away by junior goalkeeper Jackie Carty in the fourth minute.
  • In the eighth minute, junior Dana Poetzsch gained control of a loose ball in the box and fired it into the back of the net to put the Lions ahead, 1-0, in the eighth minute.
  • Sophomore Lexi Verni finished a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with Poetzsch and sophomore Joanna Graca in the 19th minute to increase Molloy's advantage to 2-0.
  • Poetzsch netted a goal on a fast break to make it 3-0 in the 22nd minute.
  • Graduate student Kelsie Moinzadeh scored off a Sabrina Bell corner kick to put the maroon and white up 4-0 in the 36th minute.
  • The Lions, who outshot the Cougars 17-7, controlled play in the second half en route to a 4-0 win.
Top Performances
  • Poetzsch recorded a team-high five points. The Hicksville, N.Y. native leads the maroon and white with five goals and 11 points.
  • Verni tallied her second goal of the season.
  • Moinzadeh netted her first goal with the Lions.
  • Bell and Graca registered their first assists of 2019.
  • Carty made six saves in her third shutout of the year.
Coach's Comments
  • "We started slow, but once we scored the first goal, we controlled the game against a good team," head coach Steve Price said.

  • The maroon and white returns home to open East Coast Conference play against Lincoln Saturday, September 21. Kickoff with the Lions is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at John A. Darcy Field.
