Hoffman's 13th Inning Home Run Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Mercy Mavericks Saturday at Mercy Field. The Lions improved to 16-27 overall and 13-14 in league play with the wins. Mercy fell to 21-26-1 overall and 13-14 in league play.

Game One: Molloy 7, Mercy 3
  • Junior Jake Saltzman grounded into a double play in the third, which allowed senior Michael Wall to score and put the Lions ahead 1-0.
  • In the sixth, junior Sean Hogan hit a two-RBI single to left center to increase Molloy's advantage to 3-0. Later in the frame, senior Nick Marino hit an RBI double, and redshirt freshman Thomas Brady hit an RBI single to make it 5-0.
  • Mercy plated two runs in the seventh to cut the away team's lead to 5-2.
  • Marino scored on a wild pitch, and sophomore Jake McCarthy hit a sacrifice fly to put the maroon and white up 7-2 in the eighth.
  • The Mavericks added a run in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Junior James Messina tallied three hits and scored one run, and freshman Chris Peralta collected two hits and scored one run.
  • Junior Joe Minucci pitched seven innings, gave up two runs on five hits, and struck out three batters to improve to 2-5 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 3, Mercy 1 (13 innings)
  • Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a sac fly from Niko Hagerty.
  • In the seventh, Peralta hit a sac fly, which plated freshman Vincent Pecora and knotted the score at one.
  • Freshman Patrick Hoffman hit a solo home run to right to put Molloy ahead 2-1 in the 13th. Later in the inning, Messina hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • Senior James Murphy pitched nine shutout innings in relief to improve to 2-2 on the year. 
Looking Ahead
  • The maroon and white hosts Mercy tomorrow, May 5. First pitch with the Mavericks is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Mitchel Field.
