Baseball Rallies to Defeat STAC in Extra Innings in Second Game of Doubleheader

Pomona, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team split a doubleheader with the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans Sunday at PCU Park. The Lions moved to 9-18 overall and 6-6 in ECC play, while the Spartans moved to 11-18 overall and 3-9 in league play.

Game One: St. Thomas Aquinas 6, Molloy 5
  • Junior Jake Saltzman hit a sacrifice fly to center, which scored sophomore Michael Nacinovich, in the top of third to put the Lions ahead 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the frame, STAC scored two runs to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • Senior Ryan Hensley hit a two-RBI single in the fourth to put Molloy up 3-2.
  • In the sixth, junior Sean Hogan, who collected three hits and scored two runs,  scored on a pass ball to increase the maroon and white's advantage to 4-2.
  • The Spartans cut the away team's lead to 4-3 in the seventh.
  • Freshman Chris Peralta hit an RBI single to right to make it a 5-3 contest.
  • The home team tallied three runs in the ninth on its way to a 6-5 victory.
Game Two: Molloy 9, St. Thomas Aquinas 7 (11 Innings)
  • Hogan hit a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Peralta, to put Molloy ahead 1-0 in the first.
  • STAC plated four runs in the third to go up 4-1.
  • Senior Michael Wall hit an RBI single, and Hensley grounded into a double play, which scored sophomore Jake McCarthy and cut the Spartans' advantage to 4-3 in the fourth.
  • The home team scored three runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 7-3.
  • The Lions tallied two runs in the fifth to cut the advantage to 7-5. Peralta grounded out, which allowed junior Matthew Imbrogno to score, and Hogan, who was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, hit an RBI single to center.
  • In the ninth, Hensley hit an RBI single, and junior Jake Saltzman scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at seven.
  • STAC had runners on second and third with no outs in the 10th, but sophomore Billy Wildeman, who struck out four batters in seven innings of relief for his first win of his career, retired the next three batters to keep the game alive.
  • Senior Nick Marino and junior James Messina, who tallied three hits, scored two runs, and drove in one run, blasted RBI doubles in the 11th to put Molloy ahead 9-7.
  • Junior Anthony Vano retired the side in order in the bottom of the stanza for his first career save.
Looking Ahead
  • The maroon and white returns home to play Caldwell Wednesday, April 10. First pitch with the Cougars is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Mitchel Field.
