Baseball Plates 29 Runs in Senior Day Sweep of Bridgeport

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Bridgeport Purple Knights on senior day Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improved to 13-24 overall and 10-12 in ECC play.

Game One: Molloy 18, Bridgeport 9
  • Sophomore Matt Overton blasted a three-run home run in the first to give the Lions a 3-0 advantage.
  • Junior James Messina hit an RBI single to increase Molloy's lead to 4-0.
  • Bridgeport scored one run in the third to make it 4-1.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, senior Nick Marino grounded into a fielder's choice, which allowed junior Sean Hogan to score and increased the advantage to 5-1.
  • The Purple Knights plated two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the home team's lead to 5-3.
  • The maroon and white tallied 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 15-3. Hogan, who was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs, hit an RBI single. Overton, who was 3-for-4 with six RBIs and three runs scored, hit a two-run double. Later in the stanza, junior Jake Saltzman, who drove in four runs, drilled a three-RBI double to make it 11-3. Sophomore Jake McCarthy, senior Ryan Hensley, and freshman Chris Peralta added RBIs in the inning.
  • Hogan and Marino hit home runs in the fifth, and Saltzman hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh en route to an 18-9 win.
  • Redshirt junior Timothy Panetta fanned five batters in five innings to improve to 4-5 on the year, and senior Anthony Pedraita recorded his second save of the season.
Game Two: Molloy 11, Bridgeport 6
  • Bridgeport scored one run in the first to go up 1-0.
  • Hogan, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games, hit a two-run double to left field to put the Lions ahead 2-1.
  • Molloy plated three runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 advantage.  Senior Michael Wall hit a sacrifice fly, Hensley recorded an RBI double, and Marino drilled an RBI triple.
  • The Purple Knights scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to knot the score at five.
  • The home team used a six-run sixth inning to take a 11-6 advantage. Hensley, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, started the rally with a two-RBI triple. Messina, who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, drove in Hensley with a single. Hogan, who tallied three hits and drove in three runs, redshirt freshman Thomas Brady, and Marino recorded RBIs in the inning.
Looking Ahead
  • The maroon and white travels to play Bridgeport tomorrow, April 28. The first game of the doubleheader with the Purple Knights is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
