Greene Drives in Four in Split with Mercy to Open ECC Play

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team opened East Coast Conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Mercy College. The Lions improved to 10-14 on the season after the doubleheaders.

Game 1: Mercy 4, Molloy 0
  • The opening contest was scoreless through six innings of play.
  • The Lions' defense was able to keep runs off the board despite Mercy having runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, and fifth innings on strong pitching from sophomore Courtney Greene.
  • The Mavericks got on the board in the seventh inning, scoring the contest's first run on a bases-loaded walk.
  • A single through the right side from Jessica Brandt scored two more runs before Kaylee Stevens scored on an error to set the score at 4-0.
  • Redshirt sophomore Mikaela Tribby singled in the home half of the seventh, but the maroon and white were unable to plate a run.
  • Tribby led Molloy at the plate, going 2-for-3.
  • Greene fanned seven batters in seven innings of work in the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 4, Molloy 5
  • The Lions' bats went to work in the first inning of the second game, with singles freshman Alex Burns and senior Kaitlyn Snyder setting up a two-run single from Greene to give the home team an early lead.
  • Greene added a third RBI on the afternoon with a single through the right side in the second inning.
  • The Mavericks took advantage of Molloy defensive errors, knotting the score 3-3 after three innings of play.
  • Mercy took a one-run lead on a home run by Erica Handegard in the fourth inning.
  • Greene responded in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun of her own over the right field fence.
  • Senior Jenna Turato kept the Mavericks from scoring through the final two innings of play, sending the game tied to the bottom of the seventh.
  • Burns reached on an error before Greene walked to set the stage for a single from freshman Marissa Nicoletti.
  • Senior Tara Byrnes then drew a seven-pitch walk with the bases loaded to give the maroon and white the 5-4 victory.
  • Greene went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. Snyder recorded two hits for the Lions.
  • Turato struck out six batters through seven innings in the win.

Looking Ahead
Molloy continued ECC play tomorrow (Mar. 31) against the University of Bridgeport. First pitch from Bridgeport is slated for 1:00 p.m.
