Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's lacrosse team fell to the #19 Greyhounds of Assumption College this afternoon in overtime, 21-20. With the loss, the Lions sit at 8-4 on the season while Assumption improved to 6-2.
How it Happened
- The two teams exchanged opening goals with neither stringing together consecutive markers until the Greyhounds netted three straight goals to take a 5-2 lead mid-way through the first half.
- The maroon and white responded with three goals of its own off the sticks of freshman Kara Rosenberg and senior Brianna Wilson to knot the score.
- Assumption scored two of the next three goals to take an 8-6 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half.
- The Lions once again strung together three straight goals, including two from freshman Abbie Bellport, to take a 9-8 lead.
- The teams were tied, 10-10, in the final five seconds of the half before Rosenberg netted her third of the contest to give the home team the 11-10 advantage at the break.
- Molloy extended its lead to as much as five goals, 17-13, early in the second half.
- The Greyhounds scored four consecutive markers to knot the contest, 17-17 with 13 minutes left to play.
- The visitors scored two of the next three to take a 19-18 lead in the final five minutes before senior Michaela Siegler tied the score at 19.
- Assumption scored with 37 seconds left in regulation, but a goal from senior Casie Caiazza tied the contest with 21 seconds remaining, forcing overtime.
- One minute into the extra period, Sarah Reilly broke the knot for the Greyhounds, securing the victory.
Top Performances
- Wilson led the maroon and white with a game-high seven goals while adding four assists for 11 points.
- Rosenberg netted a career-high five goals, including going 4-of-4 from free position, while adding a helper for six points. The freshman also controlled a team-leading six draws.
- Bellport scored her second straight hat trick, adding an assist for four points to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
- Caiazza, Siegler, and junior Amanda Reyes each tallied two points on one goal and one assist.
- Senior Molly Brown and freshman Megan Schiaffo added a goal each for the Lions.
- Junior Shannon Atwell led the team with four ground balls while sophomore Kaitlyn Meyer forced two turnovers.
- Sophomore Allie Long made a season-high 12 saves.
