Softball Drops Two in NFCA Leadoff Classic

 Clearwater, Fla. – The second day of the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic featured challenging opponents in Florida Tech and Saint Leo University. The Lions fell to 1-3 on the season, dropping both contests on the afternoon.

Game 1: Florida Tech 4, Molloy College 2
  • Senior Tara Byrnes drew a walk to start the bottom of the second inning, advancing to second on a ground out by freshman Amanda King.
  • The senior scored on a long triple to right field by freshman Alex Burnes to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
  • Freshman Lauren Ramon drove in Burns the next at bat with a ground out to shortstop to double the Lions' lead.
  • Florida Tech put up four runs in the top of the fourth inning, including a three-run double from Shany Emerenciana to go ahead, 4-2.
  • Molloy put runners on base in each of the final three innings but were unable to bring any home, falling by two runs.
  • Burns led the maroon and white with two hits. Senior Jenna Turato pitched 3.2 innings in the loss, striking out two. Sophomore Tonianne Larson fanned four in 3.1 innings of relief.
 
Game 2: Saint Leo 8, Molloy College 0 (Six Innings)
  • The Lions of Saint Leo scored in each of the opening four innings, taking a 6-0 lead.
  • Saint Leo added two runs in the top of the sixth, putting the maroon and white in danger of being run-ruled.
  • Molloy had runners on first in both the fifth and seventh innings, but were unable to drive in a run and send the game to a seventh inning.
  • Sophomore Sarah Glaser, senior Kaitlyn Snyder, and freshman Adriana Saab each recorded hits in the effort.
  • Turato struck out three in two innings of work in the loss. Larson and freshman Amanda King combined for three strikeouts through the remaining four innings of work.
 
Looking Ahead
Molloy concludes the tournament tomorrow (Feb. 10) against Wayne State at 9:00 a.m.
