Baseball Falls to Stonehill, Southern Connecticut at Northeast Challenge

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Molloy baseball team fell to Stonehill and Southern Connecticut at the Northeast Challenge Saturday at the Ripken Experience. The Lions moved to 0-3.

Game 1: Stonehill 10, Molloy 7
  • With the bases loaded, sophomore Jake McCarthy ripped a two-RBI single to left field to put the Lions, who started the first inning with five straight hits, ahead 2-0.
  • Sophomore Matt Overton scored on a wild pitch to increase Molloy's advantage to 3-0.
  • Senior Michael Wall capped the five-run frame with a two-RBI single to left field.
  • The Skyhawks tallied six consecutive runs to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth.
  • With the bases full, junior James Messina walked to knot the score at six in the fifth.
  • Stonehill plated three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-6 advantage.
  • Junior Jake Saltzman drove in freshman Chris Peralta, who had three hits and scored two runs, in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 9-7 game.
  • Stonehill scored one run in the eighth on its way to a 10-7 victory.
Game 2: Southern Connecticut 15, Molloy 5
  • The Owls plated three runs in the top of the second to make it 3-0.
  • The maroon and white responded with a four-run bottom of the second. Senior Nick Marino scored on a balk to cut the advantage to 3-1.
  • Wall singled to left to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • Freshman Thomas Brady hit a two-RBI single to center to put the Lions up 4-3.
  • Southern Connecticut tied the game in the fourth and scored two runs in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead.
  • Marino scored on a throwing error to cut the Owls' lead to 6-5 in the sixth.
  • Southern Connecticut tallied the final nine runs of the game on its way to a 15-5 win.
