NCAA East Regional Final Preview: #1 Molloy vs. #3 Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Championship Game of the NCAA Division II East Regional Volleyball Championship will be a re-match of the East Coast Conference Championship Game as the top-seeded Lions take on #3 University of Bridgeport to determine who will represent the East at the National Tournament in Denver next week. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. from Quealy Gymnasium.

Admission to the contest is $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Molloy students with ID will be given free admission.

On the Lions
  • Molloy set a program-record 27 wins with five-set victory over Saint Anselm College last night (Dec. 6) in the semifinal to advance to the round of 16 for the first time in program history. 
  • The Lions lost just one game on the floor of Quealy Gymnasium in 2019 and have been defeated only five times in the last three season. 
  • This was Molloy's sixth game that was sent to five sets on the season, and with the win the team sits at 3-3 in deciding set matches, winning the last three in a row.
  • Junior Kacey Affrunti recorded her first career double-double, totaling 20 kills to go with 10 blocks in the effort while senior Hailey Wehr added 17 kills. 
  • Senior Sophia Smith also recorded a double-double with 50 assists and 13 digs. Senior Jessica Fischetti led the squad with 22 digs while sophomore Kathleen Doherty recorded 21.
  • To advance to the semifinal, Molloy first topped #8 Adelphi University, 3-1. Redshirt senior Carly Banks became the program's all-time kill leader with 16 kills. 
  • The maroon and white totaled five All-Conference awards, including sweeping Player of the Year (Affrunti), Setter of the Year (senior Sophia Smith), Libero of the Year (senior Jessica Fischetti), and Rookie of the Year (freshman Chye Davis). Head Coach Kevin DesLauriers was named Co-Coach of the Year. 
  • Affrunti, Banks, Fischetti, and Smith also earned All-Region recognition through the D2CCA and/or the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Scouting the Purple Knights
  • Molloy has a 12-28 all-time record against UB, but enter this evening on a four-game win streak, including topping the team 3-1 to win the East Coast Conference Championship. 
  • The is Bridgeport's nine appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In the program's last appearance in 2015, the team also advanced to the Championship Game. 
  • The Purple Knights swept #7 Holy Family last evening, 3-0, in the semifinal to reach the Championship Game. Morgan Knight and Emily Burford each recorded nine kills while Klien Johnson had a double-double with 24 assists and 12 digs. Makayla Maroney put up six blocks.
  • UB had four reach double digits over #6 Georgian Court in the quarterfinals on Thursday (Dec. 5), led by 12 from Burford. Both Johnson and Carly Killorin had double-doubles with Johnson adding 24 assist and 14 digs and Killorin putting up 16 assists and 12 digs. 
  • Bridgeport had six named All-ECC as well as head coach Gary Mullin sharing Coach of the Year honors with DesLauriers. 
  • Amanda Keller was named All-Region by the D2CCA and the AVCA while Amanda Hennemann was selected All-Region by the D2CCA.
  • Bridgeport entered the tournament with a 3-6 record against the field, including falling to Molloy three times in the regular season.
