Historic Volleyball Run Ends in NCAA Championship Quarterfinal

Denver, Colo. - A program-record 28-win season for volleyball came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA National Championship Tournament as the eighth-seeded Lions fell to top-ranked and undefeated California State San Bernadino, 3-0.

How it Happened
  • The maroon and white trailed, 7-2, early in the first set. 
  • A kill from senior Hailey Wehr brought the team within four, 15-11, but the Coyotes' offense was too strong to overtake.
  • A nine-point run in the second set put the top-seeded team in front, 19-5. 
  • Redshirt senior Carly Banks tallied two kills down the stretch, but the Lions would fall behind 2-0.
  • The East Regional Champion took its first lead, 5-4, in the third set.
  • Cal. St. San Bernadino took the next three points to regain its lead.
  • In the final match, the maroon and white were able to remain within three points of the Coyotes, until the home team on the scoreboard took the final four points to seal the contest, 25-18, and advance to the semifinal.

Top Performances
  • Banks led the Lions in her final game in maroon and white, recording 11 kills.
  • Junior Kacey Affrunti added seven while Wehr put up five.
  • Senior Sophia Smith added 26 assists, two blocks, and two digs in the effort while senior Jessica Fischetti topped the back line with 11 digs.
