McCarthy, Poetzsch Net Goals in Women's Soccer's Win Against Daemen

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team topped the Daemen Wildcats, 2-1, Monday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2 in ECC play, while the Wildcats fell to 8-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.

How it Happened
  • Junior Dana Poetzsch created Molloy's first chance in the 13th minute, but her try was denied by Daemen keeper Maddie Flores.
  • The Lions, who outshot the Wildcats 8-2 in the first frame, maintained pressure in the offensive-third and generated opportunities. Sophomore Sabrina Bella and junior Lauren Marinello hit the crossbar in the 40th and 44th minutes, respectively.
  • Off of a corner kick, freshman Lindsey McCarthy tapped in a pass from graduate student Kelsie Moinzadeh with three seconds left in the half to put Molloy ahead 1-0.
  • Daemen knotted the match, 1-1, on a goal from Jamie Boyar in the 64th minute.
  • Poetzsch gathered a loose ball and moved into the box for a goal in the 82nd minute to put the maroon and white up 2-1.
  • The Wildcats made a push to tie the match, but junior Jackie Carty made saves in the 88th and 89th minutes, to hold onto the home team's advantage.
Top Performances
  • McCarthy netted her first collegiate goal.
  • Poetzsch tallied her 16th goal of the season, which ties her career-high.
  • Moinzadeh recorded her second assist of the season.
  • Carty made five saves in the victory.

  • The Lions travel to play Roberts Wesleyan Saturday, October 19. The match with the Redhawks is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
