Women's Basketball Edged by UDC, 75-70

Washington, DC – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 75-70, Wednesday evening at the UDC Sports Complex. The Lions moved to 6-11 overall and 1-6 in ECC play. The Firebirds improved to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The teams traded the lead to start the contest. With UDC ahead 14-12, the Lions ended the frame with five straight points, a layup from senior Ihnacinse Grady and a three-pointer from redshirt senior Tyra Harrison, and led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Sophomore Melody Prichard opened the second stanza with a basket to extend Molloy's advantage to 19-14.
  • Junior Kathryn Gibson made a jumper to increase the away team's lead to 28-21 with 5:08 left in the quarter.
  • The maroon and white led 34-32 at the half.
  • The Firebirds netted the first four points of the third stanza and took a 36-34 lead.
  • With the home team up 54-46, Grady tallied five consecutive points to cut the advantage to 54-51.
  • UDC led 58-53 after 30 minutes of play.
  • Down 60-53, Molloy scored six straight points to make it 60-59.
  • Gibson made a pair of free throws to put the Lions ahead 67-66 with 2:23 left.
  • The home team netted the next six points to take a 72-67 lead and held on for the win.
Top Performances
  • Grady led the Lions with a double-double (18 points and 10 assists). The senior added six steals.
  • Gibson and sophomore Melody Prichard tallied 12 points apiece.
  • Harrison netted 11 points.
  • Freshman Ellen Iversen recorded a career-high 14 rebounds.
Looking Ahead
  • The maroon and white returns home to play St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday, January 19. Tip-off with the Spartans is scheduled for noon.
