Bordenca's Game-Winner Lifts Men's Soccer Past New Haven in Overtime


Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Junior Angelo Bordenca scored in overtime lifting the Molloy men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the New Haven Chargers in its home opener Wednesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 1-2 with the win. New Haven fell to 0-3.
 
How it Happened
  • The Chargers outshot the Lions 9-1 in the first half, but Raul Bonilla made four saves in the opening stanza to keep the match scoreless at the break.
  • Junior Anthony Cestaro converted a penalty kick to put the home team ahead 1-0 in the 47th minute.
  • New Haven knotted the score, 1-1, on a goal from Alamoudi Abdullah in the 86th minute.
  • In overtime, Bordenca finished a cross from freshman Francesco Cirigliano leading Molloy to victory in the 95th minute.
Top Performances
  • Junior Anthony Cestaro tallied his second goal of the season.
  • Bordenca recorded his first career game-winning goal.
  • Cirigliano logged his first collegiate point.
  • Bonilla made seven saves and picked up his first win of the season.
Coach's Comments
  • "To give up a late goal and come back like we did shows the resilience this bunch has," assistant coach Tyler Botte said. "We were looking at being possibly 0-3, and we really had to figure out a way to win at home. We found a way to get the job done tonight. We got the win."

  • Molloy travels to play Southern New Hampshire Saturday, September 8. Kickoff with the Penmen is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
