Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The field hockey team picked up its second shutout victory of the season, defeating the Mavericks of Mercy College, 2-0, this afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions improve to 5-4 on the season while Mercy drop to 1-7 with the loss.
How it Happened
- The contest remained scoreless after the first half of play with each team firing four shots.
- Four minutes into the second half, the maroon and white drew a penalty corner. Off the corner, redshirt senior Zoe Norton sent a cross to senior Ellyn Byrnes at the center. The senior pushed the ball past the goalie to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
- A foul by the Mavericks set Norton up for her second penalty stroke of the season, which she converted to tally her 11th goal of the season, more than any other player in Division II.
- Sophomore Nadia Elcock led the Lions with a game-high four shots, all four of which landed on goal.
- In total, Molloy outshot the home team 9-5. Senior Tara Byrnes stopped all four shots she faced on net.
Coach's Comments
"Overall it was a great effort from defense to offense," said head coach
Trish Bonagura. "Our goal was to put one on the board early in the second half, which we achieved and we were able to gain momentum from there to have a very successful second half."
Looking Ahead
The Lions remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Immaculata University on Saturday (Sept. 29). The contest with the Mighty Macs is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
