Norton's Record Five Goals Fuels Field Hockey to 8-2 Victory Over New Haven

Seaford, N.Y. - Led by a single-game record five goals from redshirt senior Zoe Norton, the field hockey team earned a dominant 8-2 contest against the University of New Haven. The team set a program-record with the eight markers, and improved to 4-2 on the season while the Chargers fell to 0-2.

How it Happened

  • The Chargers got on the board first on a goal from Alexis Rider, assisted by Rebecca Collentine just three minutes into the game.
  • Norton responded five minute later in the eighth minute, bringing in a ball from 15 yards out and beating the goalie by sending the ball into the left side of the net to knot the contest.
  • Freshman Jessica Kleber tallied her first collegiate goal in the 13th minute, burying a feed from senior Ellyn Byrnes in the right side of the net.
  • Byrnes added a goal of her own, tapping in a rebound mid-air in the 16th minute.
  • Norton netted her second of the game in the 22nd minute, taking the ball in on a long run and scoring right side.
  • New Haven ended Molloy's streak following a penalty corner goal by Taylor Geaglone, assisted by Ashley Higgens.
  • Norton scored three straight markers to give the maroon and white a 7-2 lead, first ending the half with a deflection from a shot by Shaelin de Wit before opening the second half of play with an unassisted goal and a goal off an assist from sophomore Nadia Elcock.
  • Senior Lauren Keller tallied the final goal of the contest, off a penalty corner from freshman Kyra Dalli

Top Performances

  • Norton, who leads the team with 10 goals, has found the back of the net in all but one of Molloy's games and has had back-to-back multi-goal efforts.
  • Senior goalkeeper Tara Byrnes made three saves, facing just five shots on goal.
  • The maroon and white outshot the Chargers 22-17 and put 16 shots on target.
  • The Chargers maintained a 13-8 advantage on penalty corners, including nine in the second half of play.

 Coach's Comments

"It was a great team win for us today. We let one up right away and that was a wake up call for the team. We answered back right away and we really found our momentum from there," said head coach Trish Bonagura. "Zoe's leadership today was incredible. She was able to put five in the back of the cage but without the help of her teammates, it would not have been possible. All parts contributed and did their job, so I was very proud."

Looking Ahead

The Lions next face eighth-ranked Pace University on Tuesday (Sept. 18) in Pleasantville, N.Y. at 4:00 p.m.
